Innovation Lab – supporting sustainable logistics solutions

thinkport VIENNA is an open mobility laboratory which confronts the challenges of urban logistics and develops comprehensive, long-term solutions. We are a neutral, objective, and competent point of contact for topics relating to freight logistics in the city of Vienna.

Our vision is to promote logistics solutions for a liveable city and to create space for sustainable solutions. For us, logistics is more than just a function in the supply and disposal of urban spaces. For us, enthusiasm and openness are keys to innovation. Vienna should become the city for innovative, sustainable logistics in the international arena. Through the commitment of our principal we provide real test environments to take theory and concepts through to tried and test applications. On one hand we aim to create an open environment for innovation and co-creation, on the other, offer a real test environment for the methodical development of urban logistics concepts.

NEWS: PORT INNOVATORS NETWORK (PIN) EXPANDS WITH THINKPORT VIENNA AND PORT ESBJERG

October 15, 2025

Port Innovators Network (PIN) is strengthening global port innovation by welcoming thinkport VIENNA and Port Esbjerg, two dynamic innovation hubs at the forefront of sustainable logistics and the maritime energy revolution.

thinkport VIENNA and Port Esbjerg actively tackle the most pressing challenges facing the maritime and logistics sectors, bringing proven expertise and bold solutions to the network.

  • thinkport VIENNA is a pioneering open innovation hub that develops solutions for urban logistics challenges, promoting sustainable freight logistics innovations for livable cities.
  • Port Esbjerg is Europe’s leading offshore wind base port and a driving force in the energy transition, advancing hydrogen production, carbon storage, and maritime decarbonization.

With this strategic expansion to include leading innovators from Austria and Denmark, PIN is accelerating the network’s collaboration in Central and Northern Europe.

For thinkport VIENNA and Port Esbjerg, joining PIN will help them unlock new opportunities for global knowledge exchange, gaining access to cutting-edge technologies, and collaborating on solutions for urban mobility, offshore wind operations, maritime decarbonization, hydrogen, carbon storage, and sustainable port management.

PIN’s newest members will be participating in the Port Entrepreneurship International Congress (PEIC) on October 22 in Valencia, Spain.

Mag. Martin Posset, CEO thinkport VIENNA: “As the first inland port member of the Port Innovators Network, thinkport VIENNA drives forward-thinking innovation projects that redefine logistics and mobility, showcasing the vital role of inland ports as testbeds for the future of sustainable and smart port ecosystems.“

Dennis Jul Pedersen, CEO port Esbjerg Port Esbjerg: “It is absolutely crucial for the development of the Port of Esbjerg that we foster a strong and active culture of innovation. A culture with international reach, contributing new knowledge and inspiration. This is exactly what we gain through our collaboration in the Port Innovators Network.”

About thinkport VIENNA: Innovation Lab

thinkport VIENNA operates as an open mobility laboratory focused on logistics challenges, offering an indoor and outdoor test area and innovation space where companies, researchers, and city stakeholders co-create sustainable freight solutions.

A flagship achievement is the “H2 meets H2O” Project, which laid the foundation for a climate-neutral hydrogen supply chain along the Danube and positioned inland ports as key players in Europe’s energy transition. By acting as an important bridge between science, business, and city administration, thinkport VIENNA also transforms research into practical innovations, including digital solutions like a mobile departure check app for paperless truck processing.

About Port Esbjerg: Europe’s green energy transition

Port Esbjerg has transformed from Denmark’s largest fishing harbor into Europe’s leading offshore wind base port, having supported 59 offshore wind projects since 2002—with over 80% of Europe’s current offshore wind capacity shipped from its facilities. The port’s 4.5 million square meter area hosts more than 200 companies employing approximately 10,000 people, creating a comprehensive renewable energy supply chain.

Beyond offshore wind, Port Esbjerg is pioneering the green transition through Power-to-X green hydrogen production, CO2 terminal facilities for carbon capture and storage in North Sea reservoirs, and implementation of the Esbjerg Declaration, which envisions the North Sea as Europe’s Green Power Plant. Through extensive collaboration with industry partners, research institutions, and public sector stakeholders, the port is accelerating innovation across the entire offshore wind and green energy value chain.
